191st Raising Day of Assam Rifles Marked with Events Across Manipur

The Assam Rifles, recognized as the oldest paramilitary force in India, celebrated its 191st Raising Day with a series of commemorative events across Manipur. Established in 1835, the force has evolved over nearly two centuries from a regional guard into a premier internal security agency. Historically known as the “Sentinels of the North East,” the force carries a distinguished legacy of border management and counter-insurgency operations while also being the epitome of humanity and selfless service to the underserved regions of the North East. “This year’s celebrations were held under the theme ‘Honoring Sacrifice, Community Integration, and National Security,’ reflecting the ongoing commitment to regional stability and social cohesion,” said a press release of IGAR(S).

In a comprehensive outreach across various districts, the force organized activities ranging from ceremonial tributes to sports and healthcare initiatives. At Chandrakhong and Waroiching, the proceedings began with the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag and solemn tributes to personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. The events saw a unified presence of security agencies, with personnel from the Assam Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force, and State Police participating alongside village elders and ex-servicemen from the diverse communities of these villages.

The spirit of integration was particularly evident in Kakching and Churachandpur. At Churachandpur, Assam Rifles located at Khuga and Veng hosted a large gathering of approximately 900 officials and troops. The event was marked by the presence of the president of the Assam Rifles Ex-Servicemen Association and 150 veterans with their families, fostering a sense of brotherhood between serving personnel and the retired fraternity. Similarly, at the Assam Rifles School in Kakching, the force hosted 540 individuals, including 425 students and 80 parents, for a cultural showcase featuring traditional dances and musical performances, it informed.

Beyond ceremonial and educational interactions at St. Mary School in Sajik Tampak and Komlakhong, the celebrations included tangible community support. At New Samtal, a friendly volleyball match encouraged local youth participation, while a concurrent medical camp provided consultations and treatment for 125 villagers. Furthermore, at Kasom Samros, representatives interacted with women’s groups and village volunteers to strengthen local bonds. These diverse activities in the various districts of Manipur underscored the force’s role in fostering mutual trust and regional development while upholding its long-standing traditions of discipline and service on its Raising Day, it added.
