The Indigenous People’s Forum, Manipur (IPFM) has submitted a memorandum to the Justice Gita Mittal Committee, appointed by the Supreme Court of India, alleging that personnel of the Assam Rifles supported armed Kuki militants in the burning of 25 residential houses belonging to Tangkhul families at Litan Sareikhong village on February 8, 2026.
According to the memorandum, the violent ethnic clashes between Tangkhul Nagas and Kukis at Litan on that day drew widespread condemnation from different sections of society. The forum alleged that in the afternoon, 25 Tangkhul houses were set on fire in broad daylight by Kuki militants who were “fully backed” by Assam Rifles personnel.
The IPFM further claimed that the conduct of central security forces has eroded public trust, alleging partisan behaviour. It stated that while houses belonging to Kukis were guarded, Tangkhul homes were left unprotected. The memorandum also accused certain Assam Rifles personnel of being involved in operations targeting Tangkhul houses and demanded strict action against those found responsible.
The forum alleged that attempts to burn remaining Tangkhul houses in Litan have continued since February 8. It further claimed that Kuki militants were operating close to central security forces in Mongkot Chepu, Shangkai and Litan, accusing the forces of providing logistical support to militants while harassing Tangkhul residents.
The memorandum urged the Justice Gita Mittal Committee to examine the allegations and requested immediate intervention by the Union Government, citing the hardships faced by residents of Litan. It stated that more than 25 Tangkhul houses have been reduced to ashes and referred to what it described as a series of allegations against central paramilitary forces.
