Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday directed Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to accelerate the peace process in the strife-torn state. During the discussion, Shah assessed the prevailing security scenario and asked the state government to step up efforts to restore normalcy.
He also emphasized the need to strengthen the “growing harmony” and mutual trust among different communities amid ongoing ethnic tensions. The direction came after a meeting between the two leaders at the Parliament House complex in New Delhi on Tuesday, where the law-and-order situation in Manipur was reviewed.
The Manipur Chief Minister had rushed to New Delhi on Tuesday evening for meeting the union Home minister. Shah also in principle agreed to the raising of one Mahila India Reserve Battalion (IRB) for Manipur and asked the Chief Minister to send the proposal.
Singh later took to social media to express gratitude to the union home minister. “I express my sincere gratitude to the Honorable Home Minister for his in-principal approval for the raising of a Mahila IRB Battalion, aimed at enhancing our capacity in maintaining law and order and ensuring internal security. A detailed proposal will be submitted at the earliest in this regard,” the chief minister stated. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to restoring lasting peace, stability, and inclusive progress in Manipur,” he stated.
