Arrest of Youth Congress Chief Sparks Protest as YCM Raises Demand

Youth Congress Manipur on Thursday demanded immediate release of Indian National Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib who has been arrested for holding a “peaceful protest” at global AI summit in New Delhi. A total of 11 people, including Chib, have been arrested so far in connection with the “shirtless protest” at Bharat Mandapam on February 20. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Youth Congress Manipur spokesperson Ningthoujam Popilal told reporters, “The BJP led government has unreasonably detained youth congress workers in connection with a peaceful protest at an AI summit in New Delhi. Several cases have been wrongly registered against them as well. Recently, at state BJP office, BJP Mahilla Morcha president claimed congress had embarrassed the nation in front of 108 countries.” The former Youth Congress Manipur president continued, “We want to clarify that congress never sold the country. It is the BJP which is selling the nation. We know what happened at the AI summit. A Chinese robot was presented as an invention of the country. BJP had sold the nation from there onwards. Youth congress had protested against those theatrics.”

“If you recall, it was in 2010 commonwealth games when BJP workers had raised a massive protest in front of international players” he said. “We also demand the immediate release of Indian Youth Congress president who has been arrested,” he added. Chib, and former IYC national spokesperson Bhudev Sharma were arrested in connection with the case on Tuesday. Both were subsequently produced before a Delhi court and remanded to police custody for interrogation.
