A mortar was discovered at Khongampat in Imphal East district, Manipur, on Tuesday, triggering a swift response from security forces. The explosive was found in a field by locals, just a few hundred meters from a Border Security Force (BSF) camp and approximately 1.5 kilometers from the private residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, according to police sources.
Upon receiving the alert, security forces promptly cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. A bomb disposal squad was deployed, successfully defusing the mortar without any casualties. The incident has raised concerns about security in the region, particularly given the proximity to critical locations such as the Chief Minister’s residence and the BSF camp. Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the explosive and whether it was part of a broader threat.
Local residents expressed relief following the safe defusal of the mortar but voiced concerns about recurring security risks in the area. Authorities have assured heightened vigilance and increased patrols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
