Centre Urged by Manipur MP to Conserve Historic 15th-Century Vishnu Temple in Bishnupur

Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur, Maharaj Sanajaoba, urgently called for intervention by the Centre to preserve the historic Vishnu Temple in Bishnupur district during Parliament’s Zero Hour. Known as the Brick Temple, this 15th-century shrine is a significant site in the state, dating back to the reign of King Kiyamba (1467–1508 AD) and showcasing the cultural ties between Manipur and Upper Burma. The temple, constructed in the style of a traditional Bengali hut, features distinctive brick-and-lime architecture and a modest sanctum with a corbelled roof, influenced by both Bengali and Burmese styles. Sanajaoba raised concerns over the lack of maintenance for this protected monument, urging the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to enhance conservation efforts and appoint permanent staff, including a caretaker, chowkidar, and gardener. He also proposed promoting the site as a tourist destination to engage the public with Manipuri heritage, emphasizing the temple’s importance in the history of Vaishnavism in Manipur, and called for immediate governmental action to protect and revitalize it.
