Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. congratulated Dr. Palin Khundongbam, Chairman and Managing Director, and the entire Shija team on being honored the Torch Bearer of Quality Healthcare in Northeast India at the inaugural Northeast Quality Conclave 2026. The recognition was presented on February 7 at the NEDFi Convention Centre, Guwahati. The conclave was organised by GNRC Hospitals in partnership with the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO) and the Association of Healthcare Providers of India, (AHPI) Northeast Chapter. The conclave also honored distinguished contributors to healthcare in the region, including Dr.Narendra Nath Dutta of Downtown Hospital, Guwahati; Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati; and Prof. (Dr.) Subhash Khanna of Swagat Hospitals Pvt. Ltd. Shija Hospitals has maintained a consistent focus on quality and patient safety. It may be noted that Shija was the first hospital in the state to receive ISO certification in 2006. The hospital was awarded the Pre-Entry NABH certificate in December 2016 and achieved full NABH accreditation on July 13, 2023. The Shija Blood Center is NABH accredited, and the laboratory has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) since 2015.
In his address, Dr. Palin emphasized that prioritizing quality has led to a measurable reduction in avoidable medical errors, public grievances, and litigation. He underscored that patient safety must be embedded as an organizational culture rather than treated as a checklist. Highlighting the future of healthcare, he called for expanding the definition of care to include environmental responsibility, noting that sustainable healthcare represents the next phase in the quality journey. Dr. Palin also serves as the Northeast Regional Lead for the Health and Environment Leadership Platform (HELP), representing the region on its steering committee and advocating environmentally sustainable healthcare practices.
