E20 Petrol Will Destroy Your Cars

India recently achieved its goal of blending 20% ethanol in petrol — known as E20 — five years ahead of schedule. While the government promotes E20 as a step towards reducing oil imports, helping the environment, and supporting farmers, automotive expert Amit Khare highlights its downsides. He warns that E20 is degrading vehicle quality across the country, particularly affecting BS3 and BS4 vehicles. The ethanol blend reportedly causes corrosion in engines and fuel pumps, resulting in a 3–6% drop in fuel efficiency for many cars and two-wheelers. Despite ethanol being cheaper to produce, E20 petrol is sold at the same price as regular petrol, offering no cost benefit to consumers. Khare points out that the ethanol mix is harmful to older engines and raises concerns about whether E20 is genuinely beneficial or simply a revenue opportunity for the ethanol and auto sectors. The debate continues over whether E20 is truly a sustainable solution or just a short-term economic move.
