Flash floods wreak havoc in Manipur; over 56,000 affected, 10,477 homes damaged

Flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall and multiple river embankment breaches have left a trail of devastation across Manipur, affecting more than 56,000 people and damaging 10,477 homes, officials said on Tuesday. The Kongba River breached its embankment at Bashikhong in Imphal East on Monday, compounding the crisis in the worst-hit district. Areas such as Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon remain submerged as floodwaters continue to rise.

At least one person has gone missing in Imphal East after being swept away by strong currents on June 2. Meanwhile, 2,913 people have been evacuated to safety and housed in 57 relief camps set up across the district. “Imphal East is facing the brunt of the floods. Relief operations are underway, and we are closely monitoring vulnerable embankments,” an official said.

The state has witnessed 93 landslides in the past five days, further disrupting connectivity and increasing the risk of secondary disasters. Local authorities are working round the clock to restore essential services and provide aid to the displaced. With forecasts predicting more rain, the situation remains tense. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and riverbank areas to remain alert and cooperate with emergency teams.
