Manipur is reeling under severe flood conditions as continuous heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding and landslides, affecting at least 19,811 people and damaging 3,365 houses across the state. Imphal East is the worst-hit district, with overflowing rivers breaching embankments and submerging several low-lying areas. In the last 48 hours alone, over 3,800 people have been affected, 883 homes damaged, and 64 livestock reported dead. Areas like Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon were among the most severely impacted after the Imphal River overflowed, inundating roads, homes, and institutions.
Floodwaters entered Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), forcing emergency evacuation of patients from ground-floor wards. Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, and local volunteers worked tirelessly to relocate patients to safety. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with Chief Secretary PK Singh, visited flood-affected areas such as Kangla Nongpok Thong and Singjamei Bridge, urging swift relief action. The Iril River has crossed danger levels, prompting urgent embankment reinforcement.
The Army and Assam Rifles rescued nearly 800 individuals, including children and the elderly. MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam urged the Governor to declare the floods a state calamity, while Congress chief Keisham Meghachandra Singh blamed poor infrastructure planning for the disaster.
