The State Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of the Meitei man who was shot dead by Kuki militants in Churachandpur district on January 21. The deceased, identified as Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh of Kakching Khunou, was abducted along with his lover belonging to Kuki community from their residence in the Tuibong area of Churachandpur on January 21. Rishikanta was later shot dead at point blank range as seen in a video circulated by the militants suspected to be from UKNA. His body was recovered from near Natjang later that night. The woman was released unharmed.
As per a statement issued by Commissioner (Home) N Ashok Kumar, the State Government expressed deep grief over the incident and announced the ex-gratia assistance to the bereaved family. The government reiterated its commitment to providing support to the victim’s family and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. Earlier on Thursday, a Joint Action Committee led by MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, along with MLAs Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh and Kangujam Ranjit Singh, accompanied by family members of the bereaved, called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, in the evening and submitted a memorandum.
The memorandum conveyed concerns and sought appropriate action in connection with the unfortunate death of Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh. The Governor expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The Governor informed the delegation that the case is being handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough and impartial investigation. The Governor further informed the delegation that intensive combing operations have been launched since last night to apprehend those responsible, with coordinated efforts involving both State and Central forces. These operations are being undertaken on a war footing. Assuring the delegation of the Government’s earnest attention to the matter, the Governor reiterated that all necessary measures are being taken in accordance with law and once again expressed profound regret over the tragic loss of life.
