Homage Offered at Shangshak War Memorial Ceremony

The Shangshak Battalion of the Assam Rifles solemnly paid tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation at the War Memorial, Shangshak, in the Ukhrul district. The ceremony was conducted in the esteemed presence of the Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), together with officials and troops of the battalion, who gathered to honor the martyrs of the historic Battle of Shangshak, informed a press release of IGAR(S).

The Shangshak War Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the soldiers of the Allied forces and the local people who fought valiantly in 1944. Their resistance during the Battle of Shangshak played a decisive role in slowing the Japanese advance and safeguarding the strategically important regions of Imphal and Kohima during World War II. The memorial commemorates the gallant martyrs of the 4/5 Maratha Light Infantry, the 50 Parachute Brigade, and the courageous villagers who supported the Allied forces in their struggle.

During the ceremony, wreaths were laid and a moment of silence was observed to honor the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who fought in the region’s historic battles. The solemn occasion served as a reminder of the rich legacy of bravery and commitment upheld by the security forces in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and integrity.

The Inspector General commended the unwavering dedication and professionalism of the troops and reiterated the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the past while continuing to serve the nation with pride and honor. The ceremony concluded with a pledge by all ranks to uphold the finest traditions of the Assam Rifles and to remain steadfast in their duty towards the nation and its people, it said.
