Improvised mortars seized, key accused held in Manipur security operations

In a major security operation amid ongoing tensions in Manipur’s hill districts, state police and security forces carried out coordinated actions on March 24, leading to the arrest of a wanted individual and the recovery of a large cache of illegal arms and ammunition. According to official sources, Manipur Police arrested Md Shanjit Khan (38), a resident of Kabarastan Yairipok Bamon Leikai in Thoubal district, from Moreh town in Tengnoupal district. Police said the accused was wanted in connection with a case registered at Senapati Police Station in December 2025. Officials confirmed that he is linked to a serious criminal matter, though details of his role are still being examined.

On the same day, security forces launched a separate operation in Tingkhai Khullen and Nepali Khutti areas under New Keithelmanbi Police Station in Kangpokpi district. The operation involved search and area domination exercises aimed at checking illegal activities and ensuring security in sensitive locations.During the operation, forces recovered a significant quantity of arms and ammunition. The seized items include one 9 mm carbine with a magazine, two country-made 9 mm pistols with four magazines, and several country-made rifles. Among these were three single-barrel bolt-action rifles and two single-barrel pull mechanism rifles.

Officials said the most serious recovery was two improvised mortars, which are capable of causing large-scale damage. Security personnel also seized seven 12-bore cartridges, 55 rounds of ammunition of different calibres, and around two kilograms of pellets.
