The Manipur government has ordered the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services in Ukhrul district for a period of five days following concerns over the prevailing law and order situation. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure after authorities expressed apprehension that certain anti-social elements might use social media platforms to spread inflammatory content, rumours, and provocative messages that could disturb public peace.
According to an official order issued by the Home Department of the Government of Manipur, the suspension applies to internet and data services accessed through broadband, VPN, VSAT, mobile data, and other related services across the entire revenue jurisdiction of Ukhrul district. The order came into effect immediately from 11:30 AM on February 10, 2026, and will remain in force for five days unless reviewed earlier.
Officials stated that the decision was taken after reviewing the current situation and assessing the possible impact of online circulation of images, posts, and videos that could incite public emotions. Authorities noted that such content, if widely circulated, may lead to serious disturbances to public order, damage to property, or threats to human life. The suspension, therefore, has been implemented as a preventive and precautionary step aimed at maintaining peace and communal harmony in the district.
The government order was issued under the provisions of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, which empower authorities to temporarily restrict telecommunication services during situations that may threaten public safety or law and order. Officials stated that the measure is intended to prevent the spread of misinformation and to reduce the possibility of tensions escalating through online platforms.
All internet service providers and telecom operators have been directed to comply strictly with the order and ensure that services remain suspended for the specified period. Authorities also warned that any person or service provider found violating the order may face legal action as per the law.
The order was issued by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur, and has been circulated to senior administrative officials, police authorities, telecom service providers, and other concerned departments for immediate implementation. The information is also being disseminated through print and electronic media so that the public remains aware of the temporary restrictions.
