JNGVO Demands Action Against Illegal Mining in Sengmai River

A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Kakching by the Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organization (JNGVO), urging the district administration to take strict action against those involved in illegal sand and stone extraction from the Sengmai River. In the memorandum signed by JNGVO President Kshetrimayum Chhatradhari and General Secretary Nongmaithem Bheigyachandra, the organisation stated that the Sengmai River serves as a vital source of water for the people of Pallel, Unapal, Kakching, Keirak, Wabagai, Irengband Hawairou, Mairenbam and adjoining areas. The river water is used for various purposes, including water supply schemes, irrigation for agricultural fields, fish farming, and other domestic needs.

The organization pointed out that during the ongoing dry season, the water level in the river has significantly decreased, and the continuous extraction of sand and stones has further worsened the situation. Upon inspection, the organization reportedly found that heavy machinery such as JCBs and poclains are being used for large-scale extraction of sand and stones from the riverbed. Stating that water is essential for human survival, the memorandum emphasized that such activities not only affect the availability of water but also pose a serious threat to the ecological balance of the region.

The organization urged the Deputy Commissioner to conduct a thorough inquiry and take appropriate legal action against individuals involved in the alleged illegal activities in order to safeguard public interest and protect the environment. It may be mentioned that on February 23, members of the organization, along with the Caretaker Chairperson of Kakching Municipal Council and media persons, visited the river sites for inspection. During the visit, they observed several locations from Naoripat to the Pallel area where sand and stones had reportedly been extracted using heavy machinery, including JCBs.
