KTU Organises Worship Ceremony for Students

Following the recommendations made in the seminar held on “Manipuri Khunaida Mahei Lairembigi Phida,” organized by the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Khongnangthaba University, a worship ceremony on Maheigi Lairenbi (the Goddess of Learning) was organized by the university at the campus of the Kangleipak Medical and Nursing Institute. Prof. Naorem Joykumar, Vice-Chancellor, Khongnangthaba University, attended as Chief Guest, while Dr. Khaidem Jayanta Meitei presided over the programme. Prof. K. Bheigyachandra, Dean, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, attended as Guest of Honour. Speaking at the occasion, Prof. K. Bheigyachandra stated that the Goddess of Learning holds an important place in Meitei society and that, traditionally, she was worshipped on the fifth day of the lunar month of “Phairen.”

Over time, due to changing circumstances and religious practices, the tradition gradually declined and remained largely only in name. He added that the tradition has now been traced again and that Khongnangthaba University has commenced the worship from today. He further stated that students should worship the Goddess of Learning, known in the tradition as “Humbu Naoreng Sungbi, Ima Singja Khongbi,” to uphold the heritage handed down by the forefathers. In his address, Prof. Joykumar said that today’s students should keep the Goddess of Learning in their hearts and minds so that they can concentrate more deeply on their studies. He emphasised discipline and respect for elders and noted that learning with such reverence will be beneficial and will also strengthen moral values.
