Kuki CSOs Hold Candlelight Vigil for Slain BSF Constable Mithun Mandal

In a moving tribute to sacrifice and service, Kuki civil society organizations and villagers in Manipur’s Mongkot Chepu held a solemn candlelight vigil for BSF Constable Mithun Mandal. The gathering aimed to honor the fallen soldier while firmly addressing narratives surrounding the incident that claimed his life.

The village of Mongkot Chepu became the site of a profound display of grief and gratitude as community members gathered to pay homage to BSF Constable Mithun Mandal. Mandal tragically lost his life on April 10 during an exchange of fire between village volunteers in the Ukhrul district. In the wake of his passing, the Kuki CSO Working Committee (WCKCSOs), alongside local village authorities and church leaders, organized a procession to ensure his sacrifice was remembered with dignity.

The tribute began with a silent march from a local church to the specific site where the constable fell. Participants, including representatives from KSO-Ukhrul and Kuki Inpi-Ukhrul, observed a minute of silence to reflect on Mandal’s bravery. Community members described the fallen jawan as a shield, with many stating that he “took the bullets meant for us”—a sentiment reflecting the deep bond felt between the local residents and the security personnel deployed in the region.

During the program, KSO-Ukhrul Vice President Mercy Khongsai spoke passionately against the misrepresentation of the incident. Addressing what she termed “conflicting narratives” in the media, she asserted that no amount of misinformation could dilute the truth of Mandal’s courage. She emphasized that the community remains clear on the facts of the event, viewing Mandal as a selfless protector who stood between them and imminent danger.

The vigil concluded with prayers led by Pastor Thongngam Khongsai, who offered intercessions for Mandal’s bereaved family and the safety of all security forces currently stationed in the area. In a formal statement, the WCKCSOs condemned any attempts to distort the details of the constable’s death, vowing that his selflessness would be etched in their history.

The local village authority added that the loss of Constable Mandal transcends regional or departmental boundaries, stating that the community would remain “forever indebted” to him. As tensions remain a concern in the region, the vigil served as a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict and the high value the community places on those who serve in the line of duty.
