Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday chaired a high-level security review meeting following fresh incidents of violence reported from several districts, including Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, and Imphal East.
The meeting, held at the newly inaugurated secretariat, was attended by top officials, including the chief secretary, director general of police (DGP), and the state’s security adviser. Discussions focused on strengthening law and order, ensuring stability, and advancing inclusive development across the state.
In a post on X, the chief minister emphasized the government’s commitment to responsive governance and the welfare of all citizens. He reiterated the need to restore peace amid ongoing tensions in certain regions.
The review comes against the backdrop of multiple gunfights reported across Manipur. In Tamenglong district, a prolonged exchange of fire broke out on Friday morning at New Kaiphundai village along National Highway-37. The clash, reportedly between the Zeliangrong United Front and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), triggered panic among residents, forcing many to flee to safer areas.
In another incident, suspected Kuki militants allegedly opened fire at Meitei villagers in the Uyokching foothills, located along the Kangpokpi–Imphal East border. Around ten rounds of gunfire were reported during the attack.
Meanwhile, in Ukhrul district, intermittent firing between Kuki and Naga groups in Sinakeithei village continued for nearly a day, with reports indicating the use of rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) during the confrontation.
Despite the intensity of the clashes across multiple locations, no casualties have been officially reported so far.
Amid the volatile situation, the chief minister has also initiated dialogue efforts. A meeting has been proposed with representatives of the Kuki-Zo community in Guwahati on January 21 to discuss steps toward restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance in sensitive areas.
