Manipur under fire as state name taped on media bus, high-level probe initiated

The Manipur Government has launched an inquiry into an incident that occurred during the Shirui Festival, where a bus carrying journalists allegedly had the name of the State concealed, prompting widespread criticism and suspicion. The State administration has strongly refuted allegations that any official directive was given to cover the name, calling the claims baseless and misleading.

The controversy emerged following an incident on May 20, 2025, when a Manipur State Road Transport bus transporting media personnel to the festival venue was reportedly stopped and had the name “Manipur” covered with tape. The act triggered a wave of public outrage, especially on social media, with concerns being raised about a possible attempt to suppress the State’s identity.

In response, the Manipur Government issued a formal clarification, stating that no instructions were issued by any authority to conceal the name of the State. A spokesperson for the administration noted, “There was no such order or intention. The allegations are unfounded.” However, to ensure complete transparency, the Government has ordered a thorough probe into the incident.

The Governor of Manipur has constituted a high-level Inquiry Committee headed by the Commissioner of Home and the Secretary of Information Technology. The panel has been directed to submit a detailed report within a specific timeframe.

The State authorities also expressed regret over the incident and assured that strict action would be taken if any official or personnel is found responsible. “The Government is fully committed to upholding the dignity and identity of Manipur. Any lapse, if identified, will not go unpunished,” said an official release.

The incident occurred during the Shirui Festival, a cultural celebration being held as part of the broader efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. The event witnessed a strong turnout, with nearly 1.7 lakh people participating, including visitors from neighbouring states. The festival was conducted under heavy security to ensure a safe and harmonious environment.
