Massive Infrastructure Boost for Hill States as Centre Earmarks ₹25,000 Crore Under SASCI 2026–27

In a significant move to bridge the developmental gap in India’s rugged terrains, the Central Government has announced a massive ₹25,000 crore allocation under the new ‘Pride of Hills’ component. This initiative, part of the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) for the 2026–27 fiscal year, aims to transform the infrastructure landscape of nine hill states. The ‘Pride of Hills’ scheme is specifically designed to tackle the unique hurdles faced by high-altitude regions. From difficult terrain and low population density to limited revenue-generating capacity, these states have historically struggled with high debt-to-GSDP ratios. This fresh capital infusion is expected to act as a fiscal lifeline, allowing states to prioritize long-term infrastructure without further straining their budgets. Manipur has been allocated ₹2,400 crore, a move that has drawn high praise from the state’s leadership. Taking to social media, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed his profound gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The CM noted that this allocation would “greatly ease financial constraints” and accelerate inclusive growth across the state, which has faced significant socio-economic challenges in recent times. Government officials emphasize that this is not just a routine disbursement. It is a strategic intervention to ensure that geographical isolation does not translate into economic stagnation. By providing extra capital for roads, bridges, and essential utilities, the Centre aims to integrate these remote regions more deeply into the national growth story.

As these funds begin to roll out in the 2026–27 cycle, the focus will now shift to the execution of projects on the ground, ensuring that the ‘Pride of Hills’ truly delivers on its promise of prosperity for the Northeast and the Himalayan belt.
