Manipur Youth Congress organized a protest against what they described as the “dictatorial rule of the BJP,” calling for the immediate release of Uday Bhanu Chib, the Indian Youth Congress President, along with other youth leaders. During the demonstration, participants attempted to march from Congress Bhawan to the BJP state office, located approximately one kilometer away, but were halted by police at the Congress office’s gate, resulting in a brief confrontation. Demonstrators carried placards and shouted slogans like “BJP down, down” and “Narendra Modi is compromised.” An effigy of Modi was also produced but was seized by police.
The President of Manipur Youth Congress, W. Anand Singh, expressed to the media that the Youth Congress has consistently advocated for issues such as unemployment and the protection of constitutional rights for marginalized communities in India, amidst threats and arrests. He noted, “We are not frightened” despite these challenges. Singh criticized a recent incident at the AI summit where Modi’s peaceful protest was referred to as “shirtless,” labeling it unfortunate. He stated that the BJP prioritizes its party interests over the suffering of the people in Manipur and highlighted that the party has failed to voice concerns for the victims of violence in the state. The protest aimed to emphasize their dissent against the BJP’s governance and reaffirmed the Youth Congress’s commitment to “justice, rights, and democratic values” in India.
