Naga, Kuki CSOs Discuss Peace, Socio-Economic Progress in Chandel

A security coordination meeting was convened at Shalluk in Chandel District, bringing together representatives from Naga and Kuki Civil Society Organisations, Ex Servicemen and Village Chiefs. The deliberations witnessed the participation of 21 community members, including 11 from the Naga community and 10 from the Kuki community. Senior officials from Assam Rifles HQ at Kakching, Sajik Tampak Battalion and Joupi Battalion, attended the meeting, informed a press release of IGAR(S).

The presence of senior leadership underscored the commitment to peace, stability and inclusive development in the region. The interaction provided a constructive platform for dialogue, mutual understanding and collaborative planning. Discussions centered on long-term peace and socio-economic progress, with tourism identified as a key driver for local livelihoods and inter-community trust. The participants emphasized the need to identify and develop potential tourist destinations in Chandel District, recognizing tourism as a means to foster both economic growth and cultural exchange.

Youth engagement emerged as another focal point, with proposals for inter-community sports competitions to build camaraderie and strengthen bonds between different groups. The importance of education was also highlighted, with calls for improved infrastructure and funding support for schools in remote areas. Education was collectively acknowledged as a cornerstone for sustained peace and development, it said.

Throughout the meeting, both Naga and Kuki representatives reaffirmed their commitment to harmony and peaceful resolution of issues. Assam Rifles assured continued support to initiatives that strengthen unity, progress and security. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with all stakeholders agreeing to work collaboratively towards a stable and prosperous future for Chandel District, it added.
