National De-Worming Day Phase One Kicks Off in Thoubal

The National De-worming Day campaign for the current year commenced in Thoubal district under the theme “Worm Free India” as part of the Krimi Mukta Bharat Abhiyan. The initiative was launched at Thoubal DC Complex by Deputy Commissioner Yumnam Robita, who administered Albendazole tablets to students. The event included attendance from key officials such as Chief Medical Officer Dr. Y. Nokul and ZEO Y. Achouba.

During her address, Deputy Commissioner Robita highlighted the importance of deworming tablets in preventing soil-transmitted intestinal worms that contribute to stunted growth, anemia, and mental and physical impairments in children aged 1 to 19. The campaign includes provisions for administering these tablets in schools, Anganwadi centers, and colleges throughout the district, with support solicited from ASHA facilitators and educators.

Dr. Nokul noted that National Deworming Day, observed biannually since 2015, aims to combat health issues stemming from worm infestations, which negatively impact children’s development. He pointed out that, although significant progress has been made in reducing worm prevalence, children in higher classes often resist taking the tablets. Dr. Nokul emphasized the link between unhygienic practices and worm infestations, advocating for improved education on hygiene among children.

The first phase of the campaign aims to reach 82,500 children, with a mop-up day scheduled for March 31 to provide deworming treatment to those who missed the initial administration. Local ASHA facilitators and Anganwadi workers are actively engaged in the campaign, crucial for its success.
