The District Magistrate, Imphal East, has promulgated prohibitory orders across the entire revenue Imphal East district with immediate effect for a period of two months.
According to the order issued on Thursday, no person shall convene, organize, or participate in any public assembly of five or more persons in any public place. It also prohibits carrying firearms, arms, clubs, sticks, swords, spears, explosives, corrosive substances, or any other objects or weapons capable of being used to commit violence.
Further, the order stated that no rallies, processions, bandhs, strikes, or demonstrations shall be organized without the prior written permission of the District Magistrate.
No person shall block roads or public thoroughfares or obstruct any essential services. Any other act that has the potential to disturb public peace and tranquility is strictly prohibited.
The restrictions shall not apply to members of the police, armed forces, government officers on official duty, or any other person or organization specifically exempted in writing by the district magistrate, Imphal East.
“Religious and customary practices may be permitted subject to prior written approval from the District Magistrate,” the order stated.
The order also noted apprehension of a breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility, and danger to human life and property within Imphal due to potential unlawful activities by certain anti-social elements and aims to safeguard public order and tranquility in the district.
The prohibitory orders shall remain in force throughout the revenue jurisdiction of Imphal East District, Manipur, for a period of two months, effective from April 2.
Any person found violating this order shall be liable for punishment under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and other relevant laws in force, it stated.
