Tensions escalated in Manipur as protests broke out across Imphal West and East districts on May 23 over the removal of the state’s name from a government-run bus. The bus was reportedly carrying journalists to cover the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul district on May 20 when security personnel allegedly forced staff to cover the word “Manipur” written on the windshield.
At Chingmeirong in Imphal West, protesters attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan, shouting slogans against what they termed an “insult to Manipur’s identity,” but were stopped by security forces. Similar demonstrations, including human chain formations, were held at Kongba and Lamlong in Imphal East. “The incident shows a complete disregard for Manipur’s cultural and historical legacy,” said one of the demonstrators, condemning the act as a humiliation of the state’s pride.
In response, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a prominent Meitei civil body, called for a 48-hour state-wide bandh demanding accountability and answers. The Manipur government has taken serious note of the incident, initiating a probe and setting up a two-member inquiry panel. According to the Home Department, the committee will investigate the actions of the security forces and the circumstances surrounding the bus incident near Gwaltabi checkpost.
