In a major anti-insurgency drive, security forces in Manipur arrested four active members of various banned militant outfits in a series of coordinated operations conducted across Bishnupur, Imphal West, and Imphal East districts. The crackdown, which took place on February 17 and 18, marks a significant success in the state’s ongoing battle against insurgent activities. On February 17, security personnel apprehended a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) cadre, identified as Thokchom Ajit Singh, also known as Nanao (40), from the Leimaram Canal area under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district. Authorities seized a mobile phone and a Jio SIM card from his possession. Singh was reportedly under surveillance for his involvement in subversive activities.
The following day, two active members of the proscribed PREPAK (PRO) outfit were arrested in separate operations. Thokchom Sanathoi Singh, alias Chongthoiba (24), was captured near the Mahindra Showroom at Okshongbung along Tiddim Road under Moirang Police Station in Bishnupur. Officials recovered a mobile phone, an Aadhaar card, and an Airtel SIM card from him. Another cadre, Salam Sitoljit Singh, alias Seventy or Sevenkumar (36), was arrested from Uripok Khumanthem Leikai under Imphal West’s jurisdiction. Security officials stated that he was actively involved in extorting money from the general public. In Imphal East district, Manipur Police made another significant arrest on February 18. Waikhom Ibungo Meitei, also known as Mangal (26), a member of the outlawed RPF/PLA, was arrested near Public Hospital at Hatta Golapati under Porompat Police Station. Meitei was allegedly running an extortion racket targeting government employees, schools, colleges, and private citizens. Authorities recovered two mobile phones and a two-wheeler during the operation.
Officials have confirmed that investigations are underway to uncover further links and activities related to the arrested individuals. The security forces have intensified their operations in the region as part of their broader mission to curb insurgent activities and ensure public safety. The latest crackdown reflects the state’s commitment to tackling insurgency and restoring peace in the affected districts. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
