Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss key issues concerning the state, officials said.
A senior official confirmed the meeting but did not disclose detailed agenda points. The interaction comes weeks after the formation of the new government led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on February 4, bringing an end to nearly a year of President’s Rule imposed amid prolonged ethnic unrest.
According to another official, the Governor briefed the Home Minister on the prevailing security situation in Manipur and ongoing efforts to restore normalcy. Discussions reportedly focused on the rehabilitation of violence-affected Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), alongside measures to strengthen peace-building initiatives.
Security forces, the official added, continue to conduct joint operations to recover illegal arms and ammunition and to destroy illicit poppy cultivation in sensitive areas. Confidence-building steps between affected communities are also being pursued to rebuild trust and ensure lasting peace.
Earlier, on February 22, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, met Amit Shah to deliberate on several matters, including IDP rehabilitation.
An official from the Chief Minister’s Office said the Home Minister reviewed the new government’s initiatives aimed at removing barriers between communities and restoring harmony in the state.
During his visit to the national capital, the Chief Minister also met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who assured full central support for the development of national and state highways in Manipur.
Khemchand Singh, who has been in New Delhi since February 21 on his first visit after taking oath, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 24 at Seva Teerth and briefed him on steps being taken to restore peace and stability in the state.
On February 23, the Chief Minister and his deputies met Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who approved the construction of 5,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin for the rehabilitation of displaced families.
The Chief Minister also held discussions with Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia, who assured coordination with other ministries to address Manipur’s concerns.
Additionally, meetings were held with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who pledged support to revive the state’s financial health, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who assured full cooperation for the state government’s initiatives.
