In a strong and clear message ahead of Manipur’s much-anticipated Shirui Lily Festival, the apex Tangkhul tribal body, Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), has warned against any obstruction of traffic on National Highway 202 leading to Ukhrul district, where the festival is being celebrated. Issuing an official statement on Wednesday, the TNL categorically stated that any act disrupting the free movement of tourists and visitors en route to Ukhrul will be regarded as a “brazen act of animosity.” The organization stressed that no reason or justification would be acceptable for such disruption, particularly during a festival that promotes cultural unity, tourism, and peace.
The Shirui Lily Festival, celebrated in honour of the rare Shirui Lily flower that blooms only in the Shirui hills of Ukhrul, has grown into a major attraction, drawing people from across Manipur and beyond. The festival showcases the unique cultural heritage of the Tangkhul Naga tribe through music, art, traditional games, and indigenous cuisine. In light of the ongoing ethnic tensions and volatile security situation in parts of Manipur, the TNL’s appeal assumes significant importance. By insisting on smooth, uninterrupted travel during the festival, the organization has made it clear that the event must not become a target for protest or political expression.
TNL also urged all sections of society — civil bodies, local leaders, youth groups, and individuals — to work together to ensure that the festival proceeds without incident. “We appeal to everyone to uphold the spirit of harmony and peaceful coexistence,” the statement read, encouraging a united front to protect the sanctity of the cultural celebration. Security agencies are also reportedly keeping a close watch on the region to ensure safe passage for all festival-goers, with district authorities expected to coordinate efforts to facilitate travel and crowd management.
