Thadou Inpi Manipur Says Kuki Militants Issued Threats Over Hun-Thadou Cultural Festival

Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has raised concerns over reports of individuals, identifying as either Thadou or Kuki, who are allegedly threatening Thadou community members wishing to attend the 8th Manipur State-Level Hun-Thadou Cultural Festival scheduled for April 7, 2026, in Imphal. TIM accused these individuals of using armed Kuki militants’ names to intimidate participants, expressing disappointment over the divisive tactics employed. The organization emphasized the fundamental rights of Thadou individuals to cultural expression and condemned any actions that create fear or division within their community. TIM asserted that no one has the right to hinder Thadou participation in this cultural event through coercion, and vowed to take action if the intimidation continues.

The TIM has urged the Thadou community to remain united, exercise caution, and partake in the festival freely, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting their culture amidst divisive threats. This year’s festival is particularly significant as it returns to Manipur after previous celebrations in Delhi (2024) and Guwahati (2025), symbolizing a reaffirmation of the Thadou community’s indigenous identity. Preparations for the festival are in full swing, which has been celebrated annually since 2016, recognized since 2023 as a Restricted State Holiday. The festival honors the “Hun” season— a time of thanksgiving for harvests and signifies renewal, unity, and cultural continuity within agrarian traditions.
