TNL declares non-cooperation to NSCN (I-M) WTR after cadres’ kil*ling sparks shutdown in Manipur hills

The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has announced non-cooperation with the WungTangkhul Region (WTR) of the NSCN (I-M), following the failure of the group to respond to a 12-hour ultimatum over the killing of four of its cadres in Manipur’s Kamjong district. The decision was made on Tuesday after the deadline set by TNL and other Tangkhul-based civil society organisations expired at 2 pm without any response. The organisations had demanded that those responsible for the killing of four NSCN (I-M) Eastern Flank cadres at Hongbei village on the night of March 28 be handed over. With no action taken within the stipulated time, TNL declared that Tangkhul people would not cooperate with the WTR in any form. The announcement marks a serious escalation in tensions within the region. The fallout of the incident was visible across Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, where normal life remained affected due to shutdowns called by local organisations. The Tangkhul Naga Mass Movement continued its 48-hour shutdown on Tuesday, the second day of the protest. Shops, schools, and business establishments remained closed, though essential services, medical emergencies, and students appearing for examinations were allowed to function.

In Kamjong district headquarters, the Kamjong Students’ Union (KKL) also enforced a separate shutdown from 6 am to 6 pm on Tuesday. The union said the move was to express solidarity with the families of the deceased cadres. It described the shutdown as a mark of respect and support during a time of grief.Amid rising tension, the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) issued an appeal for calm and restraint. Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the forum said the situation was unjustifiable and not in line with the values of the Naga community. It stressed that there could be no justification for anger or retaliation and called for a response rooted in honesty, patience, and discipline. The FNR cautioned against reactions that mix apology with justification or hidden motives, saying such responses could worsen the situation. It said the real danger lies not only in the incident itself but also in uncontrolled emotions that could harm the community further. The forum urged leaders and the public to respond with clarity and responsibility, especially during Holy Week, and called for a spirit of healing so that peace can prevail.

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) also condemned the killing and expressed concern over the timing of such violence. In a statement issued by its president Mteisuding Heraang and general secretary Kenilo Kent, the federation said the incident was unfortunate, especially at a time when the Naga people are looking towards an honourable political solution. The NSF said such acts of internal violence weaken the unity and shared goals of the Naga people. It extended support to the families of the deceased, noting that they have refused to accept the bodies and are demanding justice and accountability. The federation raised questions about how members involved in the Naga movement could become victims of violence within their own ranks. It also stressed the need for a fair and time-bound investigation into the incident. While taking note of the NSCN (I-M)’s statement about an ongoing probe, the NSF urged that the process be transparent and impartial, with those responsible held accountable. The organisation further appealed to all groups to remain calm and avoid actions that could damage the broader Naga cause. It emphasised the importance of unity and discipline, especially at a time when the community stands at a critical point in its political journey.
