Two villagers, including a woman, were injured in twin bomb blasts at Nganukon village under Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station in Bishnupur district early morning on Monday, reports said.
Sources said the first explosive took place at around 5:40 am at an abandoned house of Salam Mani Singh and the second blast occurred at around 5:54 am at the gate of the same house.According to reports, the injured have been identified as Soibam Sanatomba (54) and Nongthombam Indubala (34). The injured duo were thereafter taken to a nearly hospital for treatment.Local MLA, S. Premchand, topic ranking officers of Manipur Police and security forces rushed to the spot and investigations are on.
Meanwhile, civil society and student organisations, including the Indigenous People Organisation Manipur (IPOM), the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Yelhoumee Kanba Lup, and other groups, have jointly called for a 24-hour total shutdown across Manipur beginning from midnight, condemning the bomb attack in Bishnupur district earlier in the day.
Addressing a media conference, IPOM president Devadutta Yumnam vehemently criticised the attacks by armed groups, alleging that such incidents were aimed at creating instability and prolonging President’s Rule in Manipur by creating a situation of fear and violence.Yumnam expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which both the Union government and the Manipur administration under President’s Rule have been handling the situation. He claimed that arms collected from Meitei village defence groups were taken on the assurance that security forces would safeguard them. However, despite this, peripheral areas continue to remain unsafe as armed groups allegedly continue to launch attacks, while no effective action has been taken against them.
