World Autism Awareness Day Observed at Shija Hospitals & Research Institute

Shija Hospitals and Research Institute Pvt. Ltd., in association with the Handicapped Development (HD) Foundation and the National Trust, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, observed World Autism Awareness Day 2026 at the SJ Auditorium, Itocha Block, under the theme “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value.”

Nganthoi Tongbram, Clinical Psychologist, delivered the welcome and keynote address, emphasizing inclusivity, empathy, and the need to create enabling environments that help individuals overcome barriers and thrive.

Chief Guest Dr. Shantibala Koijam, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, Shija Academy of Health Sciences, highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary care for improved outcomes. Guest of honor Nandinibala Nongmeikapam, occupational therapist and behavior therapist, Georgia, USA, demonstrated communication approaches and emphasized structured therapy and family involvement. Guest of Honor: Th. Sharatkumar Singh, Director, Special Olympics Bharat Manipur, spoke about government support systems, including the National Trust Act, and the need for greater awareness and access.

Dr. Chetan Khundongbam presided over the event and highlighted the contributions of individuals with autism, citing figures such as Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, and Elon Musk, whose work has had a lasting impact on the world.

A dance performance by children with intellectual disabilities highlighted their abilities and confidence. The event highlighted a shared commitment to greater awareness, stronger support systems, and meaningful inclusion for individuals with autism.
