Yumnam Khemchand Singh to Visit Tense Kangpokpi to Restore Peace and Normalcy

Amid ongoing tensions in Manipur, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is set to travel through Kangpokpi district, a Kuki-inhabited area, in what is being seen as a significant step to rebuild trust and restore normalcy.

Deputy Chief Minister Loshi Dikho said that the Naga Peoples’ Organisation, along with major tribal bodies, women’s groups, and student organisations, is preparing to give a grand reception to the Chief Minister in Senapati.

He stated that people across communities are eager for peace and are supporting the government’s initiatives, adding that only a few disruptive elements are trying to create unrest.

Highlighting the government’s outreach efforts, Dikho said the Khemchand-led administration has already visited conflict-affected areas such as Jiribam and has received overwhelming support from the public.

Appealing for unity, he stressed that lasting peace is crucial for the state’s future. He noted that while Manipur has immense potential, progress is not possible without harmony among communities.

Meanwhile, the Manipur government on Wednesday partially lifted the suspension of broadband internet services in five valley districts, though mobile data services continue to remain restricted.

According to the Home Department, the decision was taken after reviewing the situation and considering the hardships faced by citizens, as the internet shutdown had disrupted essential services, including government offices, the High Court, and work-from-home activities.

The relaxation applies only to broadband connections (ILL and FTTH) through registered service providers, with strict conditions such as restrictions on Wi-Fi or hotspot sharing.

The internet restrictions were imposed following violence in Bishnupur district, where two children were killed in a bomb attack on their home, while two others were shot dead when a mob stormed a CRPF camp during protests.
