₹3,300 crore infrastructure upgrade in Manipur to address traffic issues in Imphal

The Manipur government and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh have started a massive ₹3,300 crore infrastructure project to address Imphal’s growing traffic problems. With finance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project include constructing long-lasting Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) roads, constructing a 51.23-kilometer Imphal Ring Road, and adding flyovers, underpasses, and bridges. RCC roads, which are renowned for their longevity and minimal upkeep, will be implemented throughout greater Imphal in contrast to conventional asphalt roads. These roads are made to endure high traffic volumes and rain, which minimizes potholes and makes commuting easier.

While the initial cost is higher, RCC roads are a long-term investment in the city’s infrastructure. The Imphal Ring Road project is a strategic infrastructure initiative spanning 51 kilometers, aimed at alleviating urban traffic congestion. With a total investment of ₹1,766 crore, the project leverages a unique funding model where the central government provides 80% of the financing, complemented by Asian Development Bank support and state contributions. The plan involves the construction of multiple flyovers, underpasses, and six major bridges to improve road safety and efficiency.

Following the project’s completion, officials expect to save ₹250 crore annually in fuel usage, road repair costs, and Goods and Services Tax (GST). There will likely be a large need for engineers, construction workers, and other trained professions as a result of the project. Among the difficulties the project faces are acquiring land and addressing encroachments. In order to preserve public confidence and benefit from the project, timely implementation is essential. Imphal’s socioeconomic environment is anticipated to change as a result of the program, which will encourage residential projects and increase tourism.
