Activist Malem Thongam Detained as Peace March Is Halted in Imphal

Social activist Malem Thongam was detained by security personnel from Wahengbam Leikai in Imphal West district, just hours before she was scheduled to begin a proposed peace march to Churachandpur. The development has raised fresh concerns over how civil initiatives are being handled amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur.

According to sources, Thongam was preparing to launch the peace tour—envisioned as a symbolic outreach effort to promote dialogue and reconciliation in violence-affected areas—when police intervened and took her into custody, citing concerns over potential law and order issues.

Earlier, the activist had appealed to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to formally flag off the march, presenting it as a people-led initiative aimed at bridging divides and rebuilding trust between communities.

Her detention has drawn reactions from supporters and sections of civil society, who viewed the march as a non-political effort to foster peace at a time when movement between valley and hill regions remains heavily restricted. Critics argue that curbing such initiatives could further limit democratic space and discourage grassroots participation in conflict resolution.

Known for her involvement in social and humanitarian causes, Malem Thongam has previously taken part in campaigns focused on community welfare and reconciliation. Observers noted that her proposed march held both symbolic and practical importance, especially given the ongoing fragmentation and restricted civilian mobility across districts.

Authorities, however, stated that the preventive action was necessary considering the fragile security situation in the state.
