An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Manipur Police has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old minor girl in Thoubal district. The accused police officer, identified as Ningthoujam Muhindro Singh (50) of Heirok Part (III), Tourangbam Leikai, currently posted at Heirok Police Station, has been remanded to 15 days’ judicial custody and lodged in jail. He has also been placed under suspension from service. According to reports, the incident occurred on February 16 at a locality in Thoubal district. The matter came to light after the minor returned home crying, prompting family members to question her.
Following the incident, residents of the victim’s locality staged a protest meeting on Saturday demanding stringent legal action against the accused. Protesters urged the authorities to award the severest punishment, including capital punishment, and strongly opposed granting him bail.
Speaking at the protest site, a woman identified as Kh. Gunamani condemned the alleged act, stating that it was deeply shameful for a police officer—entrusted with protecting women and children—to commit such a crime. She demanded that the government ensure the accused is not released on bail under any circumstances and that he be awarded highest possible punishment. She further demanded that he should remain in jail for life and warned of intensified agitation if justice is not delivered.
Secretary of a local club also addressed the gathering, stating that such individuals bring disgrace to the police department responsible for maintaining law and order. He urged the government to take exemplary action and ensure that no one attempts to shield the accused. He also called upon authorities to thoroughly investigate whether similar cases had previously been filed against him. Protesters displayed placards reading, “Rapist (ASI) N. Muhindro should be given capital punishment” and “We want justice, stop sexual harassment of minor children.” Further investigation into the case is underway.
