In a significant security operation, Assam Rifles personnel apprehended two militants from Myanmar who were attempting to infiltrate India through Manipur’s Chandel district. The operation, conducted on October 18 near Sajik Tampak, prevented a potentially organised cross-border militant incursion into Indian territory.
Authorities identified the detained individuals as members of the United Tribal Volunteers Group, an armed outfit reportedly operating from Myanmar. Intelligence inputs enabled security forces to intercept the suspects before they could penetrate further into Indian territory, averting any immediate threat to local communities. Following their capture, the two militants were handed over to Chakpikarong Police Station for questioning and further legal proceedings. Security agencies are investigating their links, intentions, and potential networks to ensure the region remains safe.
Chandel district, located along the India-Myanmar border, is considered a sensitive area due to recurring cross-border insurgent activity. Security forces have maintained heightened vigilance in recent months to prevent the infiltration of armed groups, which could exacerbate existing tensions in the region.
