A one-day awareness programme on Hornbill Conservation was organised by Tamenglong Forest Division at Khundong Khunkhaiba village, Tamei Range, in association with the Khundong Khunkhaiba Village Authority and Liangmai Naga Council, Western Zone.The programme was attended by Range Forest Officer, Tamei Range Khundrakpam Johnson as Chief Guest, Chairman Liangmai Naga Council P Mairisibou as Guest of Honour and Mathiugomang Thiumai Vice Chairman Khundong Khunkhaiba as President of the function. About 60 men and women of the Nearby villages attended the awareness programme, including village authorities of Lenglong, Dikuram, Upper Takou, Lower Takou, Tamei HQ, Konphung village etc. The area is historically important as Hornbill Habitat of about four species of Hornbill namely Great Hornbill (Liangmei-Rangdi, Rongmei -Langdai, Raengdai); Oriental Pied Hornbill (Liangmei-Chakhuak, Rongmei -Rangkeng); Rufous necked Hornbill (Liangmei-Rengsiak, Rongmei-Rengsu) and Wreathed hornbill (Liangmei-Chahiu, Shongbo, Rongmei -Hiu, Ranghiu). Pamplets of different Hornbill species found in Tamenglong district were distributed for greater awareness of this Schedule 1 species according to Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
