Manipur will undertake the first phase of Census 2027 starting August 17, with self-enumeration scheduled until August 31, followed by houselisting operations from September 1 to 30, as per details released by the Centre.
The announcement comes as the nationwide Census exercise is set to begin on April 1 in a phased rollout across States and Union Territories. The first phase, known as the Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO), will collect information on housing conditions, amenities, and household assets through both self-enumeration and field visits by officials.
Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General and Census Commissioner, said in New Delhi that the Census will be conducted in two phases. The second phase, called Population Enumeration (PE), will gather demographic, socio-cultural, and economic data, including migration and fertility patterns. He also confirmed that caste enumeration will be carried out during this phase, following a decision by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs.
In Manipur, residents will have the option to submit their details digitally during the self-enumeration window from August 17 to 31. This will be followed by door-to-door visits by designated enumerators between September 1 and 30.
Narayan emphasized that all data collected during the Census will remain strictly confidential. It will not be shared with any government or private entity under the Right to Information Act, nor will it be used as evidence in court. He also clarified that no documents will be collected from residents during the process.
The Census 2027 will cover all States and Union Territories, with the first set of data expected to be released in 2027.
