CoTU Withdraws 48-Hour Ultimatum After Assurance of NIA Probe into Killing of Two Kuki-Zo Villagers

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has retracted its 48-hour ultimatum calling for the arrest of those responsible for the killings of two Kuki-Zo villagers in Manipur’s Kamjong district. This decision, made after reassurances from authorities that the case would be investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), followed consultations with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations. The victims, Thengin Baite and Thangboimang Khongsai, were killed, provoking outrage in the Kuki-Zo community, who demanded accountability. CoTU emphasized that the upcoming investigation should reflect the NIA’s dedication to impartiality and adhere to standards of transparency and integrity to secure justice. They indicated that the outcome would significantly influence public trust in the legal system. CoTU reiterated its commitment to seeking justice through constitutional means and urged the public to abstain from spreading unverified information that could jeopardize peace in the area.
