Defense-academia pact boosts drone training and innovation in Manipur

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the wider use of drone technology was signed Monday by the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), which is situated in Manipur, and the Assam Rifles, according to officials. According to a defense spokesperson, the Assam Rifles and IIIT Manipur signed an MOU at Mantripukhri in the Imphal West district to begin a drone technology relationship. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Prof. Krishnan Baskar, the Director of IIIT Manipur, and Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, Inspector General (South) of the Assam Rifles. The Director of IIIT Manipur and Maj Gen Singh emphasized the increasing necessity of defense-academia cooperation in utilizing emerging technology for national security. According to the spokesman, the two dignitaries discussed the revolutionary potential of drone systems in contemporary warfare and underlined the necessity of coordinated efforts to hasten the adoption of new technologies within operational parameters. The event represents a common dedication to capacity building and innovation. Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, a stimulating discussion was held during which IIIT Manipur academic members examined the indigenization of drone technology and its significance for autonomy and resilience in drone production.

According to the spokesperson, the day also saw the introduction of an Advanced Drone Training and Refresher Course designed specifically for our border sentinels, marking a major step toward defense readiness for the future. In accordance with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) guidelines, the program offers practical instruction in drone flight operations, maintenance procedures, and certification. The goal of the training is to give soldiers the abilities they need to assist logistics, surveillance, and reconnaissance in dynamic terrains by improving their technical competency and field flexibility. About 80 people attended the event, including IIIT Manipur teachers and defense personnel, all of whom were motivated by the same goal of technical empowerment. According to the defense spokesperson, their combined participation demonstrated the initiative’s momentum and reinforced the importance of group learning in developing a security force that is more innovative, knowledgeable, and nimble.
