Do not travel to Manipur: US issues stricter advisory for India’s northeast

The United States has issued an updated travel advisory for India, placing the country under Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, while issuing stronger warnings for several Northeastern states, particularly Manipur, due to the ongoing unrest, ethnic violence, and safety concerns. In its revised guidance, the US Department of State explicitly advises American citizens against traveling to Manipur, citing continued ethnic conflict, rising crime, and regular attacks targeting government installations.

“Do not travel to Manipur due to the threat of violence and crime,” the advisory stated, pointing to the tense situation that has led to massive displacement and security breakdowns across the state. The advisory further mentions that US government employees require prior approval before visiting Manipur, reflecting the seriousness of the ground situation.

The violence in Manipur, which began in May 2023 following ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has left hundreds displaced, numerous casualties, and widespread destruction of property. Despite occasional efforts to restore order, several parts of the state remain volatile, with incidents of armed attacks and arson continuing to be reported.
