The spirit of football and pride in tradition came alive in Manipur on Thursday as the state hosted the grand Trophy Showcase Ceremony of the 134th Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament. The glittering event was held at the City Convention Centre in Imphal in the presence of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, top civil and military officials, and sporting icons. The ceremonial unveiling featured the three iconic trophies—the Durand Cup, President’s Cup, and Simla Trophy—which had just completed a multi-day tour across significant locations in the state. Their journey included visits to Sendra, Moirang, Bishnupur, Manipur University, Kangla Fort, and the Chingmeirong War Cemetery, each site symbolizing Manipur’s deep historical and cultural links with both football and the Armed Forces.
In his keynote address, Governor Bhalla described Manipur as a “sporting powerhouse” and praised the people’s enduring passion for football. “Hosting the Durand Cup once again in Imphal reflects our people’s deep commitment to the sport and highlights the successful collaboration between civil society and the military,” he said. The Governor also lauded the Indian Army for its constant role in promoting sports and fostering national integration. The Governor was joined by Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, and senior Army officials including Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra (Chairman, Durand Cup Organising Committee and COS, HQ Eastern Command), Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar (GOC, 3 Corps), Maj Gen S S Kartikeya (GOC, 57 Mountain Division), and Maj Gen Ravroop Singh (IGAR-South).
A highlight of the evening was the presence of legendary Manipuri Olympians—Kshetrimayum Thoiba Singh and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu—who were honored at the ceremony. The gathering also included prominent coaches, NCC cadets, sports personalities, and members of the public who filled the venue with excitement and pride. Abuzz with anticipation, Manipur is preparing to host six Group Stage matches of the Durand Cup at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal between July 30 and August 12. The tournament itself, running from July 23 to August 23, will be played across five cities—Imphal, Shillong, Kokrajhar, Kolkata, and Jamshedpur. Delivering his closing remarks, Governor Bhalla congratulated the organisers and support teams for the flawless execution of the showcase and urged the people of Manipur to participate with enthusiasm. “Events like the Durand Cup don’t just showcase football excellence—they inspire youth, strengthen unity, and build bridges between communities and the Armed Forces,” he said.
