Malem Thongam, a cyclist and social activist, concluded the first phase of her “Cycling for Peace” campaign at Kangla Fort in Imphal, despite facing alleged restrictions from Kuki groups during her journey through Kangpokpi. She was received warmly by local women and prayed at the temple in the Kangla complex before visiting Khwairamband Ima Market, where vendors honored her. After cycling through five states—Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Nagaland—Malem noted widespread community support for her peace initiative but expressed disappointment over opposition from some Kuki community members. She claimed the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) attempted to obstruct her passage into Kangpokpi, leading to heightened security measures. Malem condemned these actions and requested that COTU retract their warnings. She plans to publish a magazine about her campaign in 2026, presenting it to the Government of India, and stated that if peace remains elusive in Manipur, her campaign will continue across the nation. The second phase of her campaign is scheduled for 2027.
