Flood situation eases in Manipur as rains subside, relief work gains momentum

The flood situation in Manipur has seen considerable improvement as rainfall intensity lessened, allowing water levels in major rivers to recede. The easing of rains since June 4 has brought relief to thousands of residents affected by days of inundation following heavy downpours since May 31. According to official sources, the Imphal, Kongba, and Nambul rivers have begun returning to normal levels, reducing the immediate flood threat. However, authorities remain alert as many low-lying areas continue to face challenges in drainage and accessibility.

Over 165,000 people have been affected by the floods across several districts, with approximately 35,242 houses damaged. A coordinated rescue mission under Operation Jalrahat-II continues, with the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army evacuating 4,097 individuals and sheltering them in 78 relief camps set up across the state. Tragically, a 57-year-old man died after being swept away by floodwaters in Imphal West district on Tuesday. The government has promised compensation and additional safety measures.

The agriculture sector has also suffered a blow, with crops on more than 115 hectares destroyed. The Manipur government is assessing the damage and expected to roll out relief packages for affected farmers.
