A youth-led organic agricultural program in Manipur

Determined farmers and young dreamers are spearheading a quiet organic farming revolution in the verdant hills of Senapati region. Manipur is becoming a model state for sustainable agriculture, particularly in the fields of organic fruit cultivation and floriculture, because to its rich biodiversity and temperate temperature. Chokhone, a 28-year-old Mao entrepreneur at the center of this movement, has transformed the area into a thriving center for the production of dried flowers. In the Mao region, we have between 700 and 800 committed farmers cultivating flowers in different communities. We currently sell our dried flowers in 17 Indian states,” she said.

Mao is referred to as the “Land of Flowers” because of its abundance of irises, orchids, strawflowers, and cosmos. The increasing demand for ornamental and therapeutic flowers is being tapped by local farmers, many of whom are women. Kaini, one of these farmers, proudly displayed a cluster of colorful statice blooms. They have a variety of colors.
