The highest state honor for services to the performing arts, the Bihar Kala Samman 2025, was given to legendary folk singer Kalpana Patowary in a ceremony that honors Bihar’s heart and legacy. The prize, which is given by the Bihar government’s Department of Art, Culture, and Youth, honors her outstanding efforts to preserve, revitalize, and promote Bihar’s rich folk traditions internationally. From the lyrical Chhath Geet and Birha to the powerful women’s stories and Sufi-Bhojpuri fusions, Patowary, dubbed the “Bhojpuri Queen,” has devoted her life to promoting the vibrancy of Bhojpuri music. Bihar’s rich cultural heritage has gained international attention because of her voice, which has reverberated from remote villages to major events.
Kalpana Patowary conveyed her sincere appreciation at the lavish felicitation function at Rabindra Bhavan in Patna. “I am humbled and honored to be recognized in this way. The land, the language, and the people of Bihar, whose stories I have told, deserve this honor. It is a proud time for all folk artists who are struggling to preserve our heritage, not just for me. This honor demonstrates that folk is more than just music; it is identity, history, and pride, and Kalpana Patowary continues to encourage future generations to embrace their heritage.
