Fortnight-Long Polo Championship Kicks Off at Historic Mapal Kangjeibung

One of Manipur’s largest polo tournaments began on December 5 at the iconic Mapal Kangjeibung, with more than 30 teams participating in the 15-day DGAR Men and Women Polo Championship. The championship is being jointly organised by the Directorate General of Assam Rifles (DGAR) and the All Manipur Polo Association (AMPA).

Speaking at the venue, Lt Gen Ravroop Singh, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), said the Assam Rifles has been organising various sports initiatives to guide youth towards positive engagements. He described Manipur as a “sporting powerhouse”, adding that tournaments like this can effectively channel the state’s rich sporting talent.

He also urged young players to take full advantage of the platform to showcase their abilities in a professional setting. The opening ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including retired Lt Gen Konsam Himalay Singh, AMPA president Konsam Saratchandra Singh, and Equestrian Association president Lt Col (Retd) Mangonba.
