HAL signs deal with GE Aerospace

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) announced on November 7 that it has signed an agreement with US-based General Electric (GE) for the supply of 113 F404-GE-IN20 engines, along with a support package, for the production of 97 LCA Mk1A fighter jets. The contract for the 97 Light Combat Aircraft was finalized in September 2025, with engine deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2032.

According to PTI, the ₹62,370 crore deal is part of the Indian Air Force’s Tejas programme. The F404 engines will power the indigenous Tejas Mk1A aircraft, with deliveries beginning in 2027 and completion expected by 2032. HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. D.K. Sunil earlier called the order a “red-letter day” for the company, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role fighter capable of air defence, strike, and maritime operations. The Mk1A variant will feature 70% indigenous content, including the UTTAM AESA radar and Swayam Raksha Kavach electronic warfare suite, with half of its components sourced from Indian private firms.
