Representatives of internally-displaced persons (IDPs) on Friday urged the Manipur government to expedite resettlement of all IDPs, while ensuring security in the vulnerable villages and issuing a a timeline-based progress report so that the commitments made are honoured within December 2025.
Joint representatives of the IDPs submitted a memorandum to the Manipur Governor and Chief Secretary with a reminder that the state government has just 27 days to fulfill that assurance.
“This is to place on record today’s reminder on the countdown to the government’s own December deadline for the complete resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), as assured in earlier meetings with IDP representatives and endorsed by COCOMI,” the memorandum read. Notably, under the aegis of civil society group, COCOMI, the IDPs, along with representatives of the people of Manipur, are on a relay sit-in strike at Uripok, Imphal, till the December deadline demanding resettlement of all IDPs and restoration of the fundamental rights of the people of Manipur within this month.
The IDP representatives stated that following the previous memorandum submitted on December 3, 2025, they have taken note of the initiatives for resettlement in Sadu Koireng and Waroiching areas of Bishnupur district.
“This limited progress is appreciated as a first visible step. However, thousands of families remain displaced and continue their relay sit-in protests, reaffirming that the democratic agitation will continue until comprehensive and verifiable resettlement across all affected areas is carried out,” the IDPs stated in the memorandum.“With each passing day, the deadline draws nearer, and the expectations of the affected families intensify. We reiterate that tangible movement on the ground, not mere administrative announcements, is essential to restore confidence and ensure that displaced citizens can return to their homes with safety, dignity and basic infrastructure restored,” they stated, while pledging commitment to cooperate with the government in the collective endeavour.
